Developer certifications have earned most of the eye-rolls they get. The typical one tests whether you memorized a question bank, and a question bank is trivia with a proctor attached.
AI certifications somehow made it worse. The big-vendor AI certificates, AWS, Azure, Google, all of them, test AI knowledge closed-book, multiple choice, no AI in the room. Even GitHub's new agentic AI certification examines you on directing agents without letting you direct one.
Which is strange, because the hiring market already tests the real thing. Meta and Google are moving their coding interviews to AI-allowed rounds, scored on prompting quality, verification rigor, and what the candidate catches. The judgment is real, employers and clients already pay a premium for it, and it still exists nowhere as a credential a developer can carry.
That's the gap certificates.dev is walking into. On Tuesday, July 28, it opens preorders for the AI Developer Certification, the first hands-on, proctored, vendor-neutral exam where the tools stay on and what gets graded is how well you direct them.
Three agents and a transcript
There is no question bank. Every sitting is generated fresh, so there is nothing to cram. Instead, you're dropped into a real codebase where the people around you are AI agents playing their parts:
- Your assistant is the AI you direct, with your pick of pinned frontier models from different vendors.
- Your stakeholder wrote the ticket, and the ticket is vague, because real tickets are.
- Your examiner never speaks, and it reads everything you do across two proctored 90-minute blocks.
"Early versions of the stakeholder agent were too helpful", says Alex G, the technical education lead at certificates.dev who heads the exam build. "They wrote gorgeous tickets, edge cases enumerated, acceptance criteria numbered. We had to train it down to the ticket you actually get on a Tuesday".
A session runs the way work runs. You interrogate the stakeholder until the requirement has edges, write the working context, and put your assistant on the build. The diff comes back with planted problems, maybe a function that compiles and lies, maybe a query that dies at production volume. You catch what matters, ship or push back, and defend the call in writing. Every prompt you write is part of your answer. The transcript is the answer sheet.
A score report with receipts
Your result is not a number. Every scored claim links to the exact transcript moment it came from, and a hiring-manager view renders it as plain trust statements like "can be trusted to review agent-written changes before they reach production".
Every resume this year says "uses AI daily", and it filters nobody. A verification link that resolves to that trust statement is a different conversation, in a promotion case, a hiring screen, or a client pitch.
A failed attempt stays between the candidate and the platform. Passing earns a certificate that carries the line "AI-examined, human-certified".
A curriculum with a vote count
The exam's domains weren't guessed at either. Before locking the lineup, the team asked thousands of developers who joined the waitlist which skills matter most, and 1,507 developers answered. The top picks lead the exam.

Cohort 1 opens Tuesday
Cohort 1 is capped at 300 seats, and everyone who preorders goes permanently on the roster of the first 300 AI-certified developers.
