GitHub Responds to open letter with an update to issues
Published on by Eric L. Barnes
Over 1700 disgruntled developers got together last month and created an open letter to GitHub mentioning problems they have with the service, specifically around issues. Today GitHub responded to one of the requests by creating a new issue in the project announcing a new issue creation template. This is to address to the first point in the open letter:
Issues are often filed missing crucial information like reproduction steps or version tested. We’d like issues to gain custom fields, along with a mechanism (such as a mandatory issue template, perhaps powered by a newissue.md in root as a likely-simple solution) for ensuring they are filled out in every issue.
As GitHub pushes more into the enterprise space, it will be important for the company not to lose focus on the open source projects that have been paramount in pushing it to be the most popular code service.
Update: GitHub made an official announcement on this feature.
