Harnessing Full-Text Search in Laravel

Laravel provides robust full-text search capabilities through the whereFullText and orWhereFullText methods, offering a more sophisticated approach to data queries compared to basic LIKE clauses.

Technical Requirements

  • Supported databases: MariaDB, MySQL, or PostgreSQL
  • Full-text indexes on target columns
  • For high-volume systems, consider ElasticSearch or Meilisearch instead

The whereFullText methods integrate directly with your database's full-text search features. Here's a basic implementation:

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\DB;
$users = DB::table('users')
->whereFullText('bio', 'web developer')
->get();

Building on this, you can create a more comprehensive search functionality for a blog or content management system. The following example demonstrates searching across multiple columns while maintaining the ability to filter by category:

// ArticleController.php
public function search(Request $request)
{
return Article::query()
->whereFullText(['title', 'content'], $request->search)
->when($request->category, function ($query, $category) {
$query->where('category', $category);
})
->orderBy('published_at', 'desc')
->paginate(15);
}
// migration
Schema::create('articles', function (Blueprint $table) {
$table->id();
$table->string('title');
$table->text('content');
$table->string('category');
$table->timestamp('published_at');
$table->fullText(['title', 'content']);
});

Laravel automatically generates the appropriate SQL syntax for your database system. For MariaDB and MySQL, it constructs queries using MATCH AGAINST statements in natural language mode by default.

This approach simplifies complex search implementations while maintaining efficient query performance for moderate-sized applications. For systems requiring advanced search capabilities or handling large data volumes, consider dedicated search services like ElasticSearch or Meilisearch.
