SQL Server coming to Linux

Published

Today, Microsoft announced that SQL Server is coming to Linux.

“This is an enormously important decision for Microsoft, allowing it to offer its well-known and trusted database to an expanded set of customers”, said Al Gillen, group vice president, enterprise infrastructure, at IDC. “By taking this key product to Linux Microsoft is proving its commitment to being a cross platform solution provider. This gives customers choice and reduces the concerns for lock-in. We would expect this will also accelerate the overall adoption of SQL Server.”

They already have a Github project to bring the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server.

The Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server are PHP 5 extensions that allow for the reading and writing of SQL Server data from within PHP scripts. The release contains two drivers, the SQLSRV driver and the PDO_SQLSRV driver. The SQLSRV extension provides a procedural interface while the PDO_SQLSRV extension implements PDO for accessing data in all editions of SQL Server 2005 and later (including SQL Azure). These drivers rely on the Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server to handle the low-level communication with SQL Server.
